Embracing Our Dust: Finding the Gift of Acceptance

Every day, the world around us pushes a relentless message: hustle harder, do more, be more. We are urged to curate our image, build impressive résumés, keep all options open, and never slow down. This constant pressure can leave us exhausted, always chasing an ideal that feels just out of reach. Then Lent begins, marked by ashes and the words: “You are dust.” At first, this sounds harsh, even discouraging. But when we pause to reflect, it reveals a profound freedom.

Understanding Our Limits and God’s Love

The phrase “You are dust” reminds us of our human limits. It acknowledges our weaknesses and the parts of ourselves we try to hide or manage. Yet, this statement is not meant to shame us. Psalm 103 says God “knows how we are formed; he remembers that we are dust.” This means God sees us as we truly are—fragile, imperfect, and finite—and still loves us deeply.

This truth frees us from the exhausting work of pretending to be more than human. We don’t have to perform or impress to earn God’s attention. God already knows our struggles and still chooses to show up in love. Lent invites us to stop competing and start accepting this unconditional love.

Lent as a Time to Stop Performing

In Matthew 6, Jesus talks about prayer and fasting. He emphasizes that these spiritual practices should not be about showing off or gaining approval from others. Instead, they are personal acts of faith and humility. Lent is not about hating ourselves or feeling unworthy. It is about letting go of the need to prove ourselves and embracing our true nature.

This means:

  • Letting go of perfectionism

  • Accepting our human limits

  • Focusing on sincere connection with God, not public approval

When we stop performing, we create space for genuine growth and peace.

Practical Ways to Embrace Our Dust This Lent

Here are some simple steps to help you embrace your humanity and find freedom during Lent:

  • Reflect daily on your limits: Acknowledge where you feel weak or tired without judgment.

  • Practice honest prayer: Share your true feelings with God instead of trying to sound perfect.

  • Simplify your spiritual practices: Choose one meaningful act, like fasting from distractions or spending quiet time in nature.

  • Release the need to impress others: Focus on your personal journey rather than external validation.

  • Remember God’s love: When doubts arise, remind yourself that God loves you as you are.

These actions help shift the focus from performance to acceptance.

Finding Peace in Being Beloved Dust

Recognizing that we are dust is not about feeling small or insignificant. It is about embracing our place in the world with honesty and humility. We are beloved dust, known fully by God and loved without conditions. This acceptance brings peace and strength to face life’s challenges.

Lent offers a chance to slow down and reconnect with this truth. Instead of chasing endless goals, we can rest in the knowledge that we are enough. This freedom allows us to live more authentically and gratefully.
